A truck dispatcher's day: how great dispatchers work

Updated October 2026

Great dispatchers plan ahead. Here's what a solid day looks like.

Morning

Check where every truck is, hours available, and when each one will be empty. Look for the next loads before the current ones deliver.

Midday

Negotiate and book, send broker setup packets, confirm rate confirmations match what was agreed, and send drivers the load details.

Afternoon and evening

Track pickups and deliveries, handle detention and delays, collect bills of lading and proof of delivery, and send paperwork for invoicing or factoring.

Every week

Review each truck's revenue per mile, deadhead and home time. Talk to drivers about what's working.
